Roasting Tips

These days a lot of people are trying to live healthier lives, and eating right is part of the change. Instead of frying, a lot of health conscious families now choose to roast or bake meats and vegetables. Just as important as healthy eating, roasted meals somehow evoke a special and festive feeling, and when one thinks of comfort food, probably a hearty roast with vegetables comes to mind.

Roasting is the act of cooking with dry heat. When you roast, you do not add moisture. Roasted food is cooked from the outside. The method of roasting is best for large cuts of meat that are two inches thick or more. To ensure the meat is cooked properly, one should us a meat thermometer and insert it into the thickest part of the roast. With smaller pieces of meat, such as chicken or pork chops, a meat thermometer is not always necessary. You should coat the meat with oil, salt, pepper and preferred seasonings and place it in the roasting pan. Let the meat cook in the oven at 350 degrees until the meat thermometer registers 10 degrees below the target temperature.

Vegetables are also very tasty when roasted and can be roasted alongside the meat. It is best to roast starchy vegetables like potatoes or carrots. Firm fruits are also candidates for roasting. It is a good idea to place whatever you are baking on a rack in an effort to keep it away from the moisture or drippings that will collect in the bottom of the pan.

Some people call this process baking. There is really no difference and research indicates that the terminology refers to what you are cooking versus how.
